The Greenwich Art Society is excited to present several new courses and workshops during the winter semester. There’s something for everyone – from the collector to the practicing artist, from the casual yet astute observer to the writer, and from the talented child to the serious high school art student. We warmly welcome our new faculty members, Lauretta Jones who will be teaching botanical illustration (be sure to check out her website at www.laurettajones.com), Ellen Hackl Fagan who will show you around the art world and Jeannie Thomma who will teach you the ancient art of felting. NEW: ART NOW with ELLEN HACKL FAGAN
For the casual art-lover to the serious collector, learn to look at and appreciate art in a new way! Students will go on tours through local museums, artists’ studios, and galleries as a way of exploring art, from the process to the finished product. Understand the role of galleries and museums in the process of looking at and collecting art. Join Ellen Hackl Fagan, a painter and conceptual artist, as she guides students through a wonderfully stimulating art journey.
NEW: BOTANICAL ILLUSTRATION with LAURETTA JONES
Greenwich Art Society is proud to offer our popular Botanical Illustration class with nationally-recognized artist, Lauretta Jones (http://laurettajones.com/). Lauretta comes to us via the highly-regarded New York Botanical Gardens education program and her remarkable work and expertise are now available to all of you who wish to continue studying this special field of art in Greenwich. A well-established educator, Lauretta balances expert technical instruction with development of the individual student’s style and vision.
NEW: CREATIVE WRITING II FOR ARTISTS with ROBERT MASTERSON
A continuation of Creative Writing for Visual Artists, this class is still appropriate and open to first-timers who wish to expand their perceptions, points-of-view, and expressive tools through the use of language. Learn how journaling encourages personal and artistic statements. An award-winning writer and wonderful storyteller, Mr. Masterson teaches successful writing workshops throughout the country.
NEW: FELTING WORKSHOP - "PAINTING" WITH WOOL with JEANNIE THOMMA
Have you ever seen wonderfully colorful paintings made of wool? Learn to create fabulous fiber paintings using the art of felting. Jeannie Thomma, a regionally renown fiber artist and experienced teacher, will take students through an exciting exploration of this interesting technique. Students may elect to take one 5-week workshop (or continue into a second 5-week workshop) with Jeannie. Check schedule for workshop dates.
NEW: PORTFOLIO DEVELOPMENT FOR H.S. STUDENTS
with ELLEN HACKL FAGAN
A 6-week workshop for serious high school students who want to learn what it takes to get into a college-level, fine arts program. Learn how to assemble a high quality visual arts portfolio that art programs expect. Understand how to prepare and present all application materials. In-class studio work will help the student refine artwork for inclusion in the final portfolio.
NEW: THE ARTFUL AUDIENCE: TEN MOVIES EVERYONE SHOULD SEE

How do you watch a great film and understand it as an artistic statement? Engage in the art of watching some of the greatest films ever made and discuss the elements and issues crucial to appreciating and understanding the work. Come away with an inspired understanding of how these timeless movies have affected generations past and present in so many ways. Robert Masterson has taught film classes through the years and will share his enthusiasm and unique perspective on how to artfully understand movies.
NEW: WEEKEND WATERCOLOR WORKSHOP with HOLLY MEEKER ROM
Back by popular demand, this 4-week watercolor workshop will demonstrate the essentials of watercolor painting. Holly Meeker Rom, a highly experienced watercolor artist and teacher, engages students in an exceptionally personalized way as she skillfully demonstrates what it takes to create a beautiful watercolor painting.
OPEN STUDIO – The Greenwich Art Society studio may be available for open studio sessions (without a model) in which artists and students can come together and work independently. A faculty monitor will be present but these sessions are not instructional. Those interested can check with the office in the first week of classes (Jan. 5, 2009) to find out which time slots may be available. Attendance requires a minimal fee for blocks of 5 or 10 week sessions.
