Welcome Back!
Fall is almost here and we are back to our full offering of classes. So many of you who have taken summer classes have

progressed successfully in your development. We are proud to say that several of our students had work accepted into

the current show, “Juxtapositions” at the Flinn Gallery juried by the Director of the Katonah Museum, Neil Watson.

Learning and developing skills and ideas is an ongoing process and we are pleased to continue offering you the very best

quality instruction by our professional artists/faculty. Please see our regular schedule below and call the office for

enrollment. Classes begin the week of September 20.

Individual and group instruction for ALL LEVELS. Oil techniques aimed at developing an advanced conceptual
vision and solid technical knowledge. Guest artist/teacher Karen Spring will team-teach with Enzo as class size

DEVELOP YOUR OWN STYLE - PROCESS PAINTING: CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN
ABSTRACTION, EXPRESSIONISM, AND NON-OBJECTIVE PAINTING with ANNA PATALANO

 

For intermediate and advanced painting students. Using ideas of abstract and non-objective painting, students will

learn how to deconstruct traditional subjects such as the figure, landscape, and still life to create completely unique

and personal visual images. For those who are more adventurous, delving into completely non-objective imagery is

also an option based on elements of color, form, and space to structure the image. Different painting materials,

mediums, tools, and techniques will be stressed. Critique of class work is an integral part of the course as well as

trips to major exhibits in NYC.

Dick is an Art Coach. He’s ready to guide you in mastering the medium of your choice - pencil drawing, pastels, oils,

or acrylics. Since this class is designed to help each student solve his or her own specific problems, all levels are

welcome. Beginners or advanced artists will benefit as they learn to hone their skills and focus their vision. Every

class includes a drawing or painting demonstration of basic or advanced techniques so you can see how it’s done.

Students learn how to work from life or use sizing-up techniques when working with photographic source material.

It’s serious, but it’s fun to see your work improve as you move ahead and get results that will please you and others.

PAINTING EN PLEIN AIR (Special Fall Session) with ENZO RUSSO and KAREN SPRING

Held at Greenwich Point, this course offers the fundamental principles of oil painting. In the process, you will learn to

challenge reality. You will also learn the effects of direct sunlight and how to modify the academic rules to create a

unique representation. You will explore the magic of aerial perspective and find ways to create illusion of great

distances. You will challenge uneventful staging to master the mystery of central light composition. The dynamics of

a surprising distribution of elements will provide an informal balance. Fall in love with rich impasto and with the

seductive visible brush language. Dare to be a poet of nature’s spectacle and a visual wizard. In case of rain or

other natural disturbances, the class will be held on the following day. Call office for more information.

BOTANICAL ART AND ILLUSTRATION with LAURETTA JONES
 

Explore the beauty of nature with watercolor or colored pencil through traditional and non-traditional botanical art

techniques. Work on your own projects or subjects introduced by instructor. Guidance on drawing, composition,

light on form, color mixing, paint application and more are given in individual and group demonstrations. Gain the

skills you need to express your personal vision and style. Suitable for beginners and more experienced artists.

COLLAGE AND ASSEMBLAGE USING MIXED MEDIA with CAROL NIPOMNICH DIXON
 

Put together realistic or non-objective 2- or 3-dimensional collages or assemblages (including box art) using papers,

fabrics, photographs, and found objects. Emphasize color, texture, and composition as you juxtapose and transform

materials into new visual statements that may range from autobiographical expressions to interpretations of our

society and imaginary visions. Experiment with the addition of paint and other media to enhance your images.

REPRESENTATIONAL PAINTING with KAREN SPRING
 

This is a painting course to reinforce a students understanding of the fundamentals of painting such as

compositional structure; color mixing; and technical aspects of paint and painting tools. Students can work on a

variety of subjects from images of their own. Along with individual instruction geared to each student’s level, there

will be demonstrations by the instructor, discussion, and class critiques. All levels of experience are welcome.

WEDNESDAYS:
INTERMEDIATE DRAWING - BUILDING ON THE BASICS with KATHIE MILLIGAN
 

If there’s something “wrong” with your painting, it usually has to do with the drawing!! The importance of drawing

cannot be underestimated as you learn to develop your visual skills through drawing. Also have fun stretching your

drawing skills by exploring a variety of media including pencil, pen and ink, and watercolor wash. Students will

discover hidden ability as they utilize both rapid sketch and detailed studies to examine still life set-ups and natural

forms such as flowers and plants. We will discuss important drawing fundamentals including composition, value,

positive/negative space and form. In addition, Old Master drawings will be examined as tools for learning and

inspiration. Please bring a sketchpad (9” X 12”), HB, 2B, 4B pencils and an eraser the first class.

THE CRAFT OF PAINTING - COMPOSITION AND TECHNIQUES - FIGURE, LANDSCAPE,
and STILL LIFE with ANNA PATALANO
 

This course focuses on development of painting techniques in both oil and acrylics using your favorite photos as
the basis for figurative, landscape, or still life ideas. This is not a class in photo-realism. The class will
emphasize fundamental concerns of the craft of painting -- understanding color theory and paint mixing, painting
tools, surfaces and supports, and the various techniques of impasto, glazing, wet-into-wet, and final varnishes.
Basic drawing techniques for transferring the image from the photo to the canvas will be demonstrated. Students
should have some basic training in painting as a prerequisite.

DRAWING FUNDAMENTALS FOR THE SERIOUS YOUNG ARTIST 12-16 yrs. with KATHIE MILLIGAN
 

This course is geared toward the young artist who has a good eye for drawing and would like to learn specific

drawing techniques. Concepts for composition using the viewfinder, measurement, positive and negative space and

value will be some of the subjects introduced. Students will draw from observation using still life set-ups. Pencil and

charcoal will be the primary media used and Old Master Drawings will serve as examples to help explain the

techniques introduced. Please bring a 9 x 12” sketchbook, an eraser and B and 2B pencils to the first class.

ThE FIGURE IN CLAY (and Independent Study) with PETER RUBINO
 

Learn fundamentals and finishing techniques with easy to follow step-by-step method of sculpting the figure in clay.

Integrate simple geometric shapes with anatomical forms and begin creating sculptures with dynamic movement and

composition. Develop a personal artistic style and expression. Beginners welcome. Returning students can work on

individual projects with guidance from Peter. Live model. Course offered in two 5-session sets. You may take one or

both sessions.

For intermediate and advanced students, this class will explore the impressionistic style using watercolor, acrylic,

pastels and oils. Post-Impressionism will also be explored.

PAINTING FROM A LIVE MODEL -- THE FIGURE AND PORTRAITURE with FRED MASON
 

Oil, pastel, watercolor or mixed media. For intermediate and advanced students with a drawing background.
Students will learn the basic structure of a painting while working directly from the live model. Anatomy, color,
composition, tone, and gesture of the pose will be emphasized. A high energy class environment with emphasis
on creative thinking, seeing, and skills to express the student’s personal vision. Work from a live model during
each class session.

CRITIQUE AND COLLABORATION with CAROL DIXON and ANNA PATALANO
 

This 5-week (meeting every 2 weeks), intensive seminar focuses on constructive critiques of students’

2-dimensional artwork. Team-taught by Carol Nipomnich Dixon and Anna Patalano, the seminar explores the

individual artist’s conceptual and technical concerns in a highly personalized, dynamic exchange among students

and faculty. The aim of the course is to have each artist best realize what he or she is trying to express visually.

Students are asked to bring in two to three of their current works for the first session. Meet in GAS gallery.

YOUNG ARTISTS IN THE STUDIO with KATHIE MILLIGAN
 

This class will explore new approaches to creativity with children. Using drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, and

sculpture children will learn new skills and improve on old ones as they experiment with new media and different

techniques. To reinforce their understanding, they will learn about important artists who are either historically

significant or are forerunners in contemporary art. Come join in and stretch your imagination in a relaxed, fun

environment. Materials supplied.

SUNDAYS:
MONOPRINT WORKSHOP AND INDEPENDENT STUDY with MARY NEWCOMB

Learn the printmaking technique of monoprint working with non-toxic, water based medium. This workshop will get

your creative juices flowing. Monoprints are unique, one-of-a-kind prints and are often called the “painterly” print

used by Degas, Picasso and Cassatt among many other famous painters. More experienced students can work on

independent projects. All students come to class with ideas that inspire you. Plexiglass printing plates and black and

white water-based ink provided. Students must provide their own paper, sponge, brushes and rags.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION

REGISTER through the office weekdays 9:30am to 12:30pm. CALL FIRST to make sure space is available. Tuition

payable in advance. Receipt of your check will hold your place in class. Registration slip enclosed. To continue a course

into the coming term, students must sign up and remit tuition 2 weeks in advance. Further enrollment - first come, first

served. To learn if schools are closed, check www.greenwichschools.org by 5:15 am. Or listen to WGCH 1490 AM. If

closed, GAS and the Senior Center are closed too. If only delayed, Senior Center and GAS remain open.

Parking Permits

In order to receive a parking permit, current GAS member/students must be registered and paid up before class begins.

These are issued through Town Hall by the term and they need an advance count of how many permits to produce. This

arrangement assures that each student receives parking privileges.
